Batik: Kawung pattern


Who doesn't know about Indonesian Batik? One of the famous pattern of Batik is Batik Kawung pattern from Yogyakarta.


Batik Kawung has pattern like Kawung fruit or in Indonesian it is called kolang kaling (aren palm fruit), which is drawn geometrically. The traditional philosophy of this pattern is about power and justice. So, at first, this pattern has been wore for Royal Family of Keraton (Palace). In the past times, Batik Kawung also used to covered a dead body, because Batik Kawung also means everything always back to The One who creates human.
Sometimes, you can see this pattern is closely like a blooming Lotus flower, which means longevity and pureness.



Kawung fist known in Java around 13th century, when this pattern was found in some Javanese temples, like in Prambanan and Kediri. Kawung pattern in the oldest Batik pattern from all the other pattern.

Batik Kawung also has some varieties.
Kawung Picis, which has small squares. Kawung Picis was taken from the 10 cents old money.


Kawung Bribil. It has bigger pattern than Kawung Picis. The name Bribil was taken from 25 cents old money.


Kawung Sen has bigger pattern than Kawung Bribil. The name was taken from 1 cent old money.


In modern world, you can see Kawung pattern in different way.

As ceramic pattern.



Jewelry industry also takes inspirations from the beauty of Kawung pattern.



And Louis Vuitton's stores also have ever used this Kawung pattern as their Visual Merchandising. They put and arrange the pattern beautifully.
